Effective, Positive Writing Workshops, Groups & Coaching

Compass Writers is about writing and about supporting writers with positive, art-affirming support. Whether you join a 10-week writing workshop, a weekend retreat, a long-distance walking workshop or prefer one-on-one coaching, you'll find your writing community here. All writing and response is conducted using the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) method, celebrated worldwide for its gentle, encouraging approach. Walking and simple arts are also a central part of gatherings.  Writers of all levels and backgrounds are welcome and will benefit from the prompt-based AWA method. Arts Integrated writing sessions are also used to tickle the muse. No writing or art experience is necessary. Writers of ALL experience levels, backgrounds, cultures, colors, creeds, and orientations welcome and wanted.

Walking Writers AWA Workshops

& Retreats

Ample research shows that walking elevates creativity. What better way to open your writer's mind, energize your body for the task, and invite the environment to be your muse? Compass Writers offers 1 and 3 day walking writing retreats as well as multi-week walking writing workshops along some of the world's most beautiful paths in Scotland, Portugal, Japan, Spain, and other countries 'round the globe. The goal: to claim the writer within as the artist they are and to develop a daily writing practice. All workshops are grounded in AWA and Integrated Arts methods.

10-Week AWA Writing

Workshop

Writing in community is a wonderful way to get the encouragement you need and deserve and to keep arriving at the page. That's what you will find in a Compass Writers 10-week writing workshop. We meet weekly, 3 hours per session, to write, read back, and find support in each other.  All workshops grounded in AWA and Integrated Arts methods. In preface to each session, writers are encouraged to walk vigorously for a minimum of 30 minutes. Why? Because research shows that the simple act of walking elevates creativity and can aid the development of a daily writing practice. If you can't walk, no worries. You are welcome here! Groups are limited to 10 people in order to achieve an intimate and safe writing environment.

1-on-1 Writing Sessions in the AWA /Arts Integrated model

Sometimes you just need a good kick in the pants to sit down and write and some guidance in letting loose the muse. In one-on-one sessions we will explore how to find and use prompts as a key idea-generating tool. We will also utilize various forms of artistic expression and art to tickle different parts of your brain and boost your creativity. During in person sessions, I bring all art materials. Sessions are 2 hours prefaced by a 30 minute vigorous walk — which oxygenates and revitalizes the brain and its creativity centers.
